Fakfak Nutmeg Targets Global Market at International Spice Exhibition in Guangzhou
Guangzhou, KabarsulselIndonesia.web.id | Tomandin nutmeg from Fakfak Regency, West Papua, is making its mark on the international stage. Global Spices Papua introduced the region's flagship commodity at an international spice exhibition in Guangzhou, China, which opened on September 3, 2026.
The participation of Global Spices Papua serves as a strategic move to expand market access while promoting premium-quality nutmeg and mace from Fakfak to prospective international buyers and trade partners.
During her presentation, Global Spices Papua representative Victoria Angelika stated that the event offers a prime opportunity to demonstrate that Papuan nutmeg meets global market specifications and standards.
“For buyers, finding a supplier might not be difficult. The real challenge is finding one capable of consistently meeting required specifications and quality standards,” said Victoria.
She explained that a common concern among buyers is moisture content exceeding 10%, which increases the risk of product degradation, insect infestation, and mold growth. To address this, Global Spices Papua enforces strict internal quality controls, maintaining moisture levels below 9% while ensuring products are mold-free and clear of insect holes before reaching the market.
Headquartered in Fakfak, the company operates its primary facility locally, supported by partner companies and a transit warehouse in Surabaya. Its production capacity reaches approximately 400 metric tons per year for the domestic market and 400 metric tons or more annually for international destinations.
Hans Sahupala, founder of Global Spices Papua, emphasized that the Guangzhou exhibition is key to building market networks and fostering international trade partnerships.
Beyond product quality, the company highlights Fakfak’s cultural values through the Sasi Kerakera customary tradition, which regulates sustainable nutmeg harvesting to preserve local forests for future generations. Global Spices Papua also holds several key certifications, including GACC, HACCP, and SNI.
Widhi Asmoro Jati, Head of the Fakfak Regency Plantation Office, welcomed the local business’s participation, noting that promoting Tomandin nutmeg globally plays a vital role in broadening market reach and boosting the commodity's economic value for the region.
